Renovated Alumni Hall

Alumni Hall

Charles Schwab, Pittsburgh steel tycoon, got word of the need for Mount Aloysius Academy to expand at the turn of the twentieth century. Schwab had always considered himself an alumnus of Mount Aloysius since the days when Mother M. Gertrude Cosgrave gave him piano lessons as a child in Loretto. Schwab promised, in his own words, to “foot the bill” for the brand new hall. It was dedicated in 1902 as Alumnae Hall and in fact, he wrote a check for $50,000.

Architects, Alden and Harlow, designed this music hall in red brick with a terra cotta roof, as a complement to the existing Main Building. Its vaulted ceiling and wooden beams provide excellent acoustics for both drama and music. Windows of stained glass honor classical musicians.
