Program Overview

Sign Language/Interpreter Education

Sign Language/ Interpreter Education is a long standing institutional program that offers students at Mount Aloysius College an exciting academic career. This American Sign Language (ASL) program at Mount Aloysius is only one of two programs in Pennsylvania. The Sony Virtuoso American Sign Language Learning System is

  • available to all students in this field of study;
  • the only lab of its kind in Pennsylvania; and
  • allows students to communicate with their peers through video windows on their computer.

The dedicated faculty, one of them even being Deaf, fully prepares these professional interpreters to take the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Generalist Written Exam. This program gives students many opportunities to work with and understand the deaf community from silent dinners to numerous community outreach events done by the ASL Club.

Mount Aloysius College is renowned for educating qualified interpreters for the deaf using a bilingual/bicultural philosophy in an environment that promotes cultural equality, linguistic equivalence and ethical principles and values. This curriculum delivers both theoretical and practical instruction. In the classroom academic knowledge and technical skills are obtained. In the video laboratory expressive and receptive skills are honed, culminating in a positive field experience in the community. A critical part of anyone's college education includes a broad liberal arts education. This general education helps students to gain an understanding and appreciation of themselves; their history and culture; the history and culture of humanity; the principles and impact of mathematics, science and technology; and the principles of effective communication.
