CRESSON—With the AMCC championship tournament set to get underway this Sunday, the Mount Aloysius men’s golf team is peaking at the right time.

Mount Aloysius finished first at last week’s Westminster College Autumn Invitational, giving Coach Jeff Homady the first tournament victory of his four-year collegiate coaching career.

“I was so jacked. I almost shed tears,” Homady said. “We have had six or seven second place finishes, but never a first. It was really, really nice.”

The Mounties shot a combined 319 at Westminster’s par 72 course - four strokes better than second place Grove City College.

Three of the Mount Aloysius golfers had personal bests at the Westminster outing. Dylan Link shot a 74 to finish as match runner-up, while Zack Morgan shot an 80 and Joe Nazarek shot an 83.

Link, a 2011 Bishop Carroll graduate, has consistently been the team’s top performer.

“The kid is getting hot. Dylan is playing really good golf,” Homady said.

The Mounties followed their first place finish at Westminster with a second place showing at D’Youville College last Wednesday. There, the team again shot a combined 319. But it was Link’s repeated score that garnered individual accolades.

Link earned co-medalist honors for shooting a two-over par score of 74, and tying a Penn State-Behrend’s Zach Polanski for the top overall score.

“(Polanski) is one of the top golfers in the conference. To go head-to-head with him and match his score was quite an honor,” Link said. “It was a battle the whole way. I had to focus in on every shot, and make every shot count.”

Mount Aloysius freshman Jeff Vasilko and junior Chris Arena shot their best rounds of the season at D’Youville. Vasilko, also a Bishop Carroll alum, shot a 78, and Arena shot an 80. Vasilko finished in seventh place.

“Jeff Vasilko is getting better at every tournament. He is steadily lowering his scores,” Homady said.

With less than a week to go to the two-day AMCC championship tournament, Homady is more than pleased that his team appears to have found its stride.

“We shot our two best scores at our last two matches. We are getting comfortable and playing our best golf,” he said.

Homady is really excited about the upcoming conference tournament and the Mountie fourth-year coach likes his team’s chances.

“We’re going to play well and challenge. We’ll be competitive, especially if we continue to do what we have been doing, which is play consistent golf,” Homady said.

The AMCC championship tournament will be held October 14th and 15th at Oak Tree Country Club in Middlesex, Ohio.
