|Mount Aloysius’ Soles4Souls Effort Timely||11/29/2012|
Cresson, Pa. – The Mount Aloysius College Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has so far collected well over 1,500 pairs of shoes destined for world-wide distribution. The shoes are cleaned then shipped to needy people around the world through Soles4Souls. Mount Aloysius Assistant Athletic Director Brianna Baker coordinates the effort for the College. Ms. Baker also serves as the Mountie’s Head Volleyball coach.
Mount Aloysius President Tom Foley said, “We’re proud of this effort by our student athletes and of Coach Baker’s guidance and perseverance. We also want to thank donors for disposing of their extra shoes in a creative way that helps so many people throughout the world.“
Coach Baker said that the Mount Aloysius SAAC effort was launched last January and has continued unabated throughout the year. “Our student-athletes wanted to do this initially because they noticed that they had athletic shoes no longer in use that could really help someone. Once the program was launched, the community engaged with the project and we continue to have donations.” she said.
Soles4Souls is a Nashville-based charity that collects shoes from the warehouses of footwear companies and the closets of ordinary citizens. The charity distributes the shoes to people in need, regardless of race, religion, class, or any other criteria. Since 2005, Soles4Souls has delivered over 19 million pairs of new and gently worn shoes. The shoes have been distributed to people in over 125 countries, including Kenya, Thailand, Nepal and the United States.
The Mount Aloysius College Soles4souls project is scheduled to begin again in January.
