Game Notes: Cresson, PA – The Mount Aloysius baseball (9-16, 6-4) split a home series with La Roche College Thursday afternoon, 15-12 and 7-10 (8).

In the double header junior shortstop, Bryan Nolan, picked up 3 hits (32 on the season) to tie for the career hits lead in Mounties baseball history with 155. Nolan will look to surpass the 155 mark and sit alone atop the career hits leader board this Saturday at home against Penn State-Behrend.

With the split the Mounties and Redhawks are deadlocked in a three-way tie for third place in the AMCC with Penn State-Altoona, all three teams sitting at 6-4 in conference.

Matt Cornetti, catcher/designated hitter, had a career day from the plate with a 7 for 8 performance with 5 runs and 3 RBI’s. After Thursday Cornetti leads the squad in batting average (.442) and slugging percentage (.663).

The Mounties outlasted La Roche in a back and forth affair in game one 15-12. After Mark Saxman gave up 4 runs in the top half of the first Mt. Aloysius countered with 7 in the bottom half to take the early lead. Saxman went 2.1 innings giving up 7 hits and 9 runs before Matt Mangery came in for the win (1-1). Ryan Blaschak got the hold fanning 2 over 2.1 innings and Joe Hribar picked up the five out save, his second of the season.

La Roche got a man on in the top half of the seventh with a double to left field. On the ensuing at bat John Caruso of La Roach hit a deep fly ball down the right field line which looked to get the Redhawks rally started. Kyle Rose made a terrific running catch for the second out. Hribar checked to see if the runner left early, tagging to third, and the umpire agreed with Hribar’s assessment. This sparked an explosion from Redhawks manager Chase Rowe who threw his helmet to the dirt arguing the call. But the decision was final as the umpire would not waiver and the Mounties escaped for the game one victory.

Rowe’s antics at the end of game one ignited the fire in his team for the second game of the double header as they jumped out 5-0 lead after three innings. The Mounties wouldn’t record their first hit of the contest until Michael Claycomb slapped a double to the right field gap but didn’t get their offense rolling until the fourth.

Nolan led off the fourth with a triple down the right field and Cornetti drove him into score two batters later. Aaron Kovach followed suit with a single up the middle to score Cornetti and later scored himself on a passed ball to cut the lead to 5-3. The Mounties would add 3 more in the fifth to deadlock the score at 6 apiece.

With two away in the bottom of the seventh and the Mounties down by one (7-6) Cornetti hit a line drive single to left field that was mishandled by the left fielder and Skyler Sheeder blistered around the base paths to tie the game and take it into extra innings.

Mike Goddisart, the Mounties #1 started, came back in to pitch in the extra frame. He went 7.2 innings (his longest start of the season) and struck out 9 in his first loss of the season. The Redhawks scored 3 runs in the top half of the first and brought in their closer in the bottom half to come away with the 10-7 victory in 8 innings.

Come out this Saturday (1:00pm home doubleheader) and support Mounties baseball as they take on top seeded Penn State-Behrend as Bryan Nolan looks to get one more hit to become the all-time career hits leader!
