Erie, PA - Led by sophomore Derrick Capiak's no-hitter, the Mount Aloysius baseball team defeated #2 LaRoche in the AMCC playoffs by the score of 3-0 on Thursday morning at Penn State-Behrend.
Capiak was outstanding as he faced just two batters over the minimum. He also struck out seven as he put the Mount into the winners' bracket of the double-elimination conference tournament.
LaRoche also received strong pitching from the arm of Tyler Ferguson, who went seven innings while allowing just four hits and no runs. However, after Ferguson departed after the eighth inning, the Mount pounced in the top of the ninth.
With runners on first and third and no outs, Connor Bowie provided the biggest hit of the day with a triple to right field that brought in two. Alexander Martin then hit a groundout that brought it Bowie to make it 3-0 heading into the bottom of the ninth. Capiak then retired the side in order to complete the victory.
The Mount will now face Penn-State Behrend tomorrow at 11 am. Behrend defeated Pitt-Greensburg 9-3, then LaRoche beat Greensburg 2-0 in an elimination game.
The winner of the Mount-Behrend game will advance to the championship game on Saturday, while the loser will face LaRoche to decide which team will also advance to Saturday's final.
