In the season finale for both teams, the Mount Aloysius men's soccer team defeated Franciscan 3-1 on Tuesday afternoon in AMCC play. In a back-and-forth affair early, the Mount found their chances. Freshman Xavier Cardona had two chances off headers early but just missed the frame. He then found a breakway opportunity but was stopped by Franciscan keeper Edward Huber. Cardona would make up for the early missed chances as he rose high on a corner from Daniel Oliveira to win a header in the box. His shot was deflected in by fellow freshman Patrick Chea, his sixth goal of the season. Mount Aloysius took the 1-0 lead into the half. The Mount continued to dominate play in the second period. Oliveira got behind the defense at the 71:09 mark on a pass from Curtis Brumbaugh and slotted it home to make it 2-0. Four minutes later, Zach Whittington found Oliveira over the top again and he blasted home his second goal of the game to make it 3-0. With two minutes to go, controversy ensued as Franciscan's Peter Hermann took out Mount goalkeeper Jamie Greenwood from behind at knee-level with a reckless challenge. Hermann, Greenwood and Cardona were issued red cards in the aftermath. Seconds after the restart, Whittington was issued a red by the referee for a 50-50 challenge. The Mount played the final minute and a half down three men but held on for the win. Oliveira led the offensive charge with six shots. Cardona had four while freshmen Joey Moxey and Oshane Williams each registered three shots. Greenwood recorded 10 saves in net. Tuesday's contest marked the final game for seniors Luca Farina and Curtis Brumbaugh, who have each been with the program for four years. |
