| Game Notes: | Cresson, PA - It took a walk-off double in game two to ensure the Mount Aloysius Mounties (14-6, 8-0) softball team remained undefeated in conference with a home sweep of Penn State- Altoona, 11-6 and 9-8. In game one the shorthanded Mounties squad experienced a scare in the first inning when starting pitcher Jess Seasoltz came hard of breathing in the pitching circle and had to leave the game. She would return from the hospital to watch her team pull out the win in the second game as she was deemed okay by medical professional. With the other starting pitcher on the season Carrie Shevock also unable to pitch due to injury Coach Carl Teeter turned to Freshman Megan Brown to come in and take the reigns for the Mounties. Making only her third appearance of the season the team was relying on Brown to finish out the remainder of both games. Megan did not disappoint as she picked up both wins on the day as her confidence grew with each pitch and allowed her offense to provide the run support she needed for the victories. After Jess departed in game one the PSU Lions would jump out to an early 3-0 lead midway through the second inning. A six run onslaught by the Mounties in the third would provide to be the difference as they battled for the 11 to 6 win. Jena Isenberg, who had 1 HR on the season coming into the game, connected on two deep bombs in her first two at bats to ignite the spark the team needed. She finished the game with 3 hits (2 HR's) in 4 at bats with 3 RBI's and 2 runs scored. Catcher, Whitney Shearer, continued her torrid pace on the season with two more doubles which led to 4 RBI's and 3 runs. In the nightcap the Mounties would need a walk-off to ensure the victory. In a back and forth affair the Mounties took a 7-5 lead heading into the top of the 7th with Brown looking in control in the circle. The PSU Lions staged a fierce comeback with back to back singles to lead off the inning before Erin Cline crushed a three-run shot to deep center to take the 8-7 lead. Brown would pitch her way out of the inning knowing her offense wouldn't go down without a fight in the bottom of the seventh. Her teammates didn't disappoint. Showing extreme patience and discipline at the plate Andie O'Neal, Amy Miller, and Whitney Giedroc all drew walks to load the bases to start the bottom half. That’s when Whitney Shearer stepped up to the plate with the winning run at second and no one out. Perfect person for the perfect situation. Shearer smacked a line drive double up the middle and O'Neal and Miller touched home to provide walk-off excitement in the Mounties victory. Shearer had a phenomenal day at the plate in the double header with 5 hits, 9 RBI's, and 5 runs and her fourth HR of the season, which leads the team. Her 9 RBI's on the day was a season high for the Mounties and makes 28 for Shearer on the season. Interesting game note: Whitney Giedroc's sister was in attendance at Wednesday’s game in Altoona attire. Kendra Giedroc is the starting left fielder for the Lions. In game two, Kendra's first two at bats were pop-flies to her sister, Whitney, at first base. The Mounties will continue their home stand on Saturday as Pitt-Bradford (10-8, 7-1) travels to the Mount in what could prove be a preview of the conference championship. Don't miss out on the action this Saturday at 1:00pm! |
