Mount Aloysius College recently held its annual Athletic Banquet to acknowledge the accomplishments of the 2011-12 sports seasons.

Mount Aloysius President Tom Foley presented Nathan Lindsley and Chelsea Perehinec with the Male and Female Scholar Athlete of the Year awards.

Lindsley, a senior from Narragansett, Rhode Island, is a pitcher on the Mount Aloysius baseball team. He is a physical therapy major with a 3.93 cumulative grade point average.

Perehinec is a junior on the Lady Mounties volleyball team. The Bishop Guilfoyle graduate carried a 3.88 grade point average while having a dual major in business administration and accounting.

Mount Aloysius Board of Trustees Chairman Dan Rullo, a member of the University of Pittsburgh football hall of fame, shared a story of his own experience as a student-athlete before presenting Mike Godissart and Kaylee Keagy with the Male and Female Athlete of the Year awards.

Godissart is an all-conference pitcher on the Mounties baseball team. He was twice this season named the AMCC’s Pitcher of the Week. The Chestnut Ridge alum is leading the team this year in innings pitched and victories, and will finish his career as the College’s all-time leader in career shutouts.

Keagy came to Mount Aloysius from Bishop Guilfoyle High and has earned all-conference honors every year she has suited up for the Lady Mounties basketball team. She finished her career with 1,299 points,which ranked her second on the all-time scoring list.

In recognition to their generosity and support of Mount Aloysius athletics, longtime benefactor and Board of Trustees member Michael McLanahan and his wife Astride were presented with the Ray and Louise Walker award from Mount Aloysius President Tom Foley. President Foley described Michael and Astride McLanahan as true friends of the College and as true fans and as people who appreciate the deeper lessons of sport.

McLanahan chaired the original campaign to construct the Walker outdoor athletic complex. He also led the way in the campaign for the newly constructed Mountie Stables, the latest edition to the Mount Aloysius athletic facilities.

Additionally, the McLanahan’s recently donated the 700 pound bronze horse statue, aptly named “Victory,” that currently resides in front of the Mount Aloysius Health and Fitness Center.

President Foley congratulated all Mount Aloysius student-athletes on receiving the conference’s inaugural Peak Performance Award for academic excellence and having the highest percentage of student-athletes named to the AMCC’s Academic All-Conference Team. He invited all student-athletes included in the AMCC’s academicrecognition to stand. They did so with thunderous applause.

Finally, he read aloud the closing words of his recent Op Ed piece reflecting on this year’s Lady Mounties basketball season. The piece was written after the Ladies Mounties’ season ended with a playoff loss to a tough LaRoche College team. The piece reflected not just on the single game but on the philosophy of sport appreciation at Mount Aloysius College.

“At Mount Aloysius we like to win Championships every bit as much as the next team,” Foley said. “But we don’t just calculate the wins and losses and we don’t just measure the size and number of the trophies. At the Mount, we measure improvement. We measure our student’s capacity to perform up to or past their potential.

"We look for signs of selflessness and teamwork in the number of assists and pats on the back. We look for teammates who watch each other’s backs and warn us when we are in danger of being doubled up or picked off. We look for signs of grit and hard work, in dives after loose balls and floor burns to show for the effort.

“On all those counts, on these very essential life measures, our Lady Mounties and our Mount Aloysius community came home big winners… In a season long on bad news about college sports, here was a truly good story--and a great night for all who search for the good in intercollegiate sports.“
