BUFFALO- Becky Bard hit a shot at the buzzer and the Mount Aloysius women's basketball team won their regular season finale in dramatic fashion with a 63-61 comeback victory over D'Youville on Saturday afternoon in overtime. With the victory, the Mount finishes the regular season 16-9, 11-7 in AMCC play.
Down 33-19 at half, the Mounties used a strong push in the first five minutes of the second half to get back in the ballgame. A 13-2 run capped by two Olivia Rupp free throws cut the deficit to 35-32 with 14:58 to go. D'Youville continued to hold a slim lead all the way into the final minutes.
With 1:58, the Mount's Alexis Restori canned a layup to make it 51-50 in favor of D'Youville. Lindsy Sammarco then notched a steal and was fouled, where she made both free throws to give the Mount only their second lead of the game. Neither team scored again until D'Youville's Alexis Smith hit one of two from the line to notch the game at 52-52 with 23 seconds left. Sammarco had a chance to win it but missed a jumper as the game went into overtime.
With the game tied at 59-59, Sammarco hit a jumper with 1:12 to go to give the Mount a two-point lead. D'Youville's Lynn-Lee Stresign responded with a bucket, which set up the game winner from Bard at the buzzer.
Sammaro was sensational for the Mount with 26 points, nine rebounds and three steals in 41 minutes of action. Bard registered 14 points and six boards. Teddi Burkett grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds and Restori dished five assists.
Alexis Smith had 20 points and 13 rebounds to lead the home side.
The Mount will travel to #3 seed Pitt-Bradford on Tuesday evening for an AMCC quarterfinal. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
