Instead of practicing on their last day of volleyball camp, the women's volleyball team spent the morning working at "Our Family Kitchen" in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. "Our Family Kitchen" is a soup kitchen that is run through St. Vincent DePaul. It offers a place where people can receive food, care, and fellowship. Here, the Mount Aloysius volleyball team organized and took inventory on their food supply and helped serve lunch to nearly one hundred people who came through. While serving the food, the players were able to meet and talk to the people who came in.
"Doing this made me realize that the things I take for granted, could mean everything to other people," Sarah Brewer.
"It was really sad and made me want to cry. Especially when one man came up to us and thanked us for coming," Michelle Peoples.
"There was one family there that really touched my heart. It was a homeless mother and her three young children. They were so happy to see us. Just talking with them made me appreciate how fortunate I am. I mean, it's not something you think about every day; we went for one day and they live like that every day," Amanda Knowles.
"It was an eye-opening experience and it made me realize that we are lucky for what we have. It also feels good helping people," Kate Byrne.
"It was a great experience. Some of the stories that we were told are very inspirational. The woman in charge of the soup kitchen, is an amazing woman and I wish I could be like her because she does everything she can to help others. I am hoping that I can go back again and get things to donate," Lindsay Christine.
"It was an inspirational experience that really made me appreciate what I have. I cannot wait to go back and help out again!" Katelyn Hughes.
"It was an amazing experience that really touched my heart. i am excited to go back and volunteer," Desiree Reed.
"I have had the opportunity to volunteer in situations like these before and each time it reminds me of how blessed I am and how much our time there meant to those we served," Melinda Cameron.
"It was really touching for me to see how all of the girls on the team interacted with the people there. It was great to see how they came together, not only as a volleyball team, but as those who care about others," Coach Berkey.
"I wanted our community service project this year to be a chance for the team to work with other people and to help them see just how fortunate we are. The best part of the day was just seeing the response from our team and how they were affected by what we did. Each and every one of them seemed to take something away from this service project." Coach Baker.
