James Anthony Sharkey, born in Derry, Northern Ireland, is an Irish historian and diplomat. In addition to his historical writing, he serves as Permanent Representative to the Council of Europe, Strasbourg, and chaired the Human Rights Committee. He has served as Irish Ambassador to a number of countries including Australia, Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Japan, Denmark, Iceland, Russia, and others. Ambassador Sharkey began his career as a teacher in Stepney, Derry and Dublin. He earned degrees in Russian and Russian history from University College Dublin and Birmingham University. He is the author of works on folk history in Inishowen, Scots Gaelic, the Russian peasantry and Lafcadio Hearn. He joined the Irish Diplomatic Service in 1970.
