Dear Tom, I am very sorry that Sattie and I cannot join you and Michele for the inauguration ceremony. I am sure that it will be a fitting celebration of your outstanding career, from which all your students can draw inspiration. I want particularly to recall on this day your contribution to peace and understanding in Ireland through your work as senior adviser to then Senator, now Vice-President, Joe Biden. Those of us who were closely connected with the foundation of the Congressional Friends of Ireland benefited immeasurably from your first-hand experience of the Troubles, and particularly your direct engagement with the Nobel Prize-winning Peace People in Belfast. This background gave special credibility to your interventions and helped to ensure that, even in the most difficult and divisive days in Northern Ireland, our American friends sustained as their clear-sighted priority an absolute emphasis on the politics of reconciliation and non-violence. This was of indispensable importance for John Hume and other peace makers in Ireland. Sattie joins me in wishing you every success in your new role. I wish I could be in attendance at the inauguration of Tom P. Foley, J.D. as thirteenth President of Mount Aloysius College, but circumstances don't allow it. I would like to tell you about Tom. He came to Northern Ireland as a young man to help the community of the Peace People in their work of reconciliation. We all fell in love with Tom; he was so handsome, always smiling and willing to help us in any way. I was a mother of five sons and one daughter and became a member of the Peace People to help bring about peace in our troubled country. We owe this to our children and grandchildren. I was just an ordinary mother struggling to bring up my family in a very predominant para military environment. I was not highly educated but Tom encouraged me to speak out saying that what I had to say was important and that I didn't need to use big words to get my message across. Tom formed a football league, he taught young teenagers from troubled areas to play basketball. Catholics and Protestants played against each other. Tom believed that children could be brought together through the commonality of sport. He wrote about justice, something ordinary people like me know nothing about. He took part in everything we did, even on party nights where we had fun and weekends away with the wives of prisoners and their children. Tom was a great friend in my family. He spent weekends in my home and I called him my American son. He lay on my floor with my sons fighting with them to get an empty space. I am so proud of him for what he has achieved. I congratulate you on choosing him as your President. I wish Tom and his family every success and happiness for the future. I will be with him in spirit at his Inauguration. I am his Irish mum, Freda. Best Wishes.Freda LynessPeace People, Northern Ireland

Dr. Foley, Instead of congratulating you, I am thanking you for accepting the position as our President here at Mount Aloysius College. I feel that God sent you our way to bring about new and improved changes and an uplifting attitude for the Mount. I was recently eating at my favorite dining place, McDonald's, and overheard two students discussing how much they like the new president! They went on to say that he is very approachable and easy to talk to. They also said they heard he even has EMINEM, the singer, on his IPOD! How they would know this I do not know. I want to wish you all that is good in the world and will pray for you. Mary GouseSecretary to the Registrar - Mount Aloysius College
Congratulations to both Dr. Foley and Mount Aloysius College in "finding one another."
