Heritage and Tradition

Hall in Main BuildingWe find in all Catholic colleges and universities certain uniquely Catholic dimensions that can sustain the life of the mind:

  • Rich intellectual heritage (2000 years of human effort to grapple with problems and potential of human experience)
  • Rich diversity (disputation, disagreement, development)
  • Sacramental principle (takes world seriously)
  • Universality of the Catholic faith (should permit college to prize pluralism and diversity and find a legitimate place at the table for every conversation partner
  • Communitarian nature of redemption (genuine bonds of friendship and mutual respect and support are envisaged as the core of the educational enterprise, not only book learning but human formation are sought)
