The use of distance education technologies combined with a "Smart Classroom", simulation mannequins, and preceptors has the ability to virtually transport personnel, equipment and instruction in such a way as to potentially enrich the student educational experience. Until now, little has been done to investigate the best strategies for designing and delivering a distance education course involving mastery of specific psychomotor skills as a learning outcome.
Mount Aloysius College's nursing program addresses this need by using educational technologies as a means of bringing together experts, students, faculty, and sophisticated digital equipment in the delivery of a technology-enhanced physical assessment course.
