The History, Politics, and Geographic Analysis program at Mount Aloysius College gives students the tools to understand and analyze the forces shaping societies, governments, and communities. Through an interdisciplinary approach combining history, political science, and geographic analysis, students develop critical thinking, research, and communication skills while exploring real-world issues. The program prepares graduates for meaningful careers in public service, law, policy, research, and education, equipping them with the knowledge, ethical judgment, and professional skills to make an impact in a complex and interconnected world.
- Knowledge Base in History, Politics, and Geographic Analysis – Students will demonstrate depth of fundamental knowledge and comprehension of the major concepts, theoretical perspectives, trends within social science, and empirical findings to discuss how historical, political, and geographic principles apply to social phenomena.
- Describe key interpretations, principles, and overarching themes in history, politics, and geography.
- Develop a working knowledge of historical, political, and geographic content domains.
- Describe applications of history, politics, and geography within the field.
- Critical Thinking – Students will demonstrate skills and concepts in historic interpretation and methodologies, basic political processes, institutions, and concepts as they operate in different national and international contexts. Furthermore, students will evaluate arguments in an impartial fashion.
- Students will describe historical, political, and geographical events from multiple perspectives while utilizing scientific reasoning to draw conclusions.
- Students will formulate, sustain, and justify historical, political, and geographical arguments using original ideas, innovative, integrative, and problem-solving skills.
- Students will develop skills of self-reflexivity and positionality when examining subject matter and conducting arguments and/or research.
- Information Literacy in Social Science Research – Students will identify and describe the contours (characteristics) and stakes (assertions) of conversations among historians, political scientists, and geographers within the social sciences.
- Students will frame research questions.
- Students will support arguments with historical evidence drawn from primary and secondary sources.
- Students will assess the reliability of sources and evaluate their content.
- Students will place historical and political arguments into the larger scholarly narrative interpreting, designing, and conducting basic social science research through the incorporation of political, historical, and geographic factors.
- Communication – Students will demonstrate the ability to construct a cogent argument, present information orally, and/or in written form, engage in discussion of historic, political, and geographic concepts, explain the ideas of others, and express their own ideas with clarity, as well as produce a research study or other historical project.
- Demonstrate effective writing for different purposes.
- Exhibit effective presentation skills for different purposes.
- Apply ethical standards to evaluate history, political science, and geography as well as the practices of the field.
- Build and enhance interpersonal relationships in conjecture with a developed understanding of their meaning in a global context.
