Dr. Jennifer Gmuca is an Assistant Professor of History in the Justice, Law, and Society Department at Mount Aloysius College. In 2023, she helped lead a comprehensive revision of the History, Politics, and Geographical Analysis program. She teaches courses in American, European, Asian, and World Civilizations, as well as Public History. Dr. Gmuca first joined Mount Aloysius as an adjunct faculty member in 2013 and transitioned into a full-time role in 2021. After more than a decade at the College, she remains dedicated to her work with students and the broader academic community.

She earned her Ph.D. in History from Liberty University. Her scholarship centers on women’s history, with a focus on the socioeconomic and medical dimensions of reproduction and childbirth in nineteenth-century America. Her dissertation, “Lying-In Transition: The Modernization and Professionalization of Childbirth in Rural Alabama, 1870–1910” (2023), analyzes how the professionalization of obstetric medicine during the Professionalization era transformed patterns of authority, access to care, and everyday life in the rural South. Drawing on demographic data and archival records, her case studies demonstrate how emerging medical institutions developed alongside—and reinforced—the radicalized politics of the Jim Crow South.

In addition to her research on sociomedical obstetrics, Dr. Gmuca is engaged in local historical research in collaboration with regional organizations. She has presented her research at regional conferences and is regularly invited to speak at local historical societies and public libraries. Her public engagement bridges academic research and community history.

Dr. Gmuca is the author of Wait, How Many Pages? The Bedrock for Conquering Capstone (2021), a book drawn from her experience guiding students through advanced research and writing projects. She serves as advisor to the History, Politics, and Geographical Analysis (HPGA) Club, mentoring students as they prepare for graduate study, professional careers, and public service. Within the College, she has served on the Research Committee (2023–2024) and the Professional Funding Committee (2024–present), and has acted as Parliamentarian for the Faculty Assembly since 2024. Beyond the institution, she served on the Penn Cambria School District School Board from 2023 to 2025 and remains committed to community engagement through volunteer coaching in youth athletics. Much of her work—whether in the classroom, in advising meetings, or in community settings—centers on helping students think critically, write clearly, and approach the past with analytical rigor.
