Dr. Merrilee Anderson, Professor of Science and Mathematics, joined the MAC faculty in 2000.  She earned her B.A. in Biology from Washington and Jefferson College, M.S. in Plant Pathology from Clemson University, and Ph.D. in Plant Pathology from The Pennsylvania State University.  She teaches a variety of courses at the Mount, including Botany, Water Ecology, Microbiology, and Human Anatomy and Physiology.  She encourages students to participate in service or research projects that focus on water quality and impacts of abandoned mine drainage (AMD). For example, former students collected and identified diatoms in healthy and AMD-impacted systems (article available at https://openjournals.bsu.edu/finefocus/article/download/563/537/). She has participated in a service trip to Guyana, the Mercy Roundtable in Ireland, and led an EF tour to Costa Rica.  Dr. Anderson is active in the Allegheny Branch of the American Society of Microbiology (ABASM), which hosts a meeting every November where students are encouraged to present their work.  She currently serves as the Region 3 coordinator for the American Society of Microbiology.
