The ultrasonography program at Mount Aloysius College provides students an exciting entry into diagnostic sonography that reflects their future clinical and career experiences. Whether as a part of the associate’s or bachelor’s degree pathway, you’ll gain applicable experience in equipment operation, patient diagnosis and treatment, professional communication, and more.
You’ll gain hands-on experience in the classroom using actual sonography equipment. Focus on abdomen-extended or obstetrics and gynecology for more specialized placement post-graduation.
Within the variety of degree options available, Mountie ultrasonography students are prepared to perform diagnostic ultrasound examinations, and receive foundational knowledge in the anatomy, physiology, and pathology of scanned organ systems. Students are also trained in recognition of sonographic patterns and in the provision of clinical presentations, all skills necessary for success in the field.

4-Year Track
A bachelor degree in ultrasonography can open doors for supervisor, management, and teaching opportunities. Students complete one year of general education credits prior to starting the program. This helps orient students to the college setting and prepares them for upper level college courses. The last year is clinical rotation.
Students complete general ed courses during the first year, which is unique to this degree option.
3+1 Track (Bachelors)
Students complete an associate degree in ultrasonography first, graduate, then complete their bachelor-level courses. The last year of this path can be completed entirely online.
Ultrasonography (Associate)
An associate degree is entry-level for sonographers. This path prepares students for AB, BR, and OB/GYN sonographic specialities.
Radiography/Ultrasonography 2+2 (Associate to Bachelor)
This path allows students to dual-certify in radiography and ultrasonography. Receive your associate degree in radiography first, then return for your bachelor degree in ultrasonography. This gives students a leg up, especially in smaller hospitals or imaging centers that prefer their employees to perform more than one job.

The ultrasonography program is designed to prepare competent entry-level sonographers in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains for the abdominal sonography-extended, obstetrics and gynecology, and breast sonography concentrations.
Upon completion of the Degree in Ultrasonography, the graduate will:
- have a solid grounding in liberal arts that includes arts, sciences and advanced imaging modalities;
- be able to effectively interact in the professional setting using various modes of communication;
- understand equipment operation and be able to employ basic interventional procedures to facilitate the production of high quality images;
- possess advanced knowledge of imaging equipment and accessories, techniques, and procedures demonstrating expertise in several imaging modalities;
- be able to assess various imaging examination procedures and assist in attaining pertinent information in the diagnosis and treatment of the patient;
- understand the code of ethics for imaging specialists, be able to work collaboratively, and attend to patient needs; and
- have developed a commitment to life-long learning and the pursuit of personal and professional growth through participation in educational and professional activities.

Ultraonography licensure and certification laws/regulations vary from state to state. It is highly recommended that students planning to pursue a professional credential in states other than Pennsylvania contact the appropriate state licensing agency to seek guidance and verify requirements prior to starting a program.
