Why “A Comfortable Cup of Tea”?
When Catherine McAuley, the foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, was dying, many of the sisters gathered around her bedside to say goodbye and to pray the prayers for the dying. Not long before she died, at the end of a long day of waiting, she said to one of the sisters: “Be sure you have a comfortable cup of tea for them when I am gone.” Ever since, the comfortable cup of tea has been a symbol of the warm and caring relationships which were at the heart of Catherine McAuley’s Mercy vision.
Mount Aloysius December graduates are gifted with an antique porcelain teacup at graduation. The teacup is a reminder of Catherine McAuley’s final instructions to her fellow Sisters of Mercy, instructing them to “have a comfortable cup of tea when I am gone”. The gift is also a symbol of hospitality, a vital pillar of our Mercy vales. Guests are invited to bring China teacups that they may no longer use to be used in this tradition.
