In the course of two careers spanning half a century, Tom Coakley has had opportunities to fly planes, command squadrons, write books, and teach courses on Shakespeare and other writers. Tom received his Bachelor of Arts from Villanova University, his Master of Arts from The University of Texas at San Antonio, and his Ph.D. from The Pennsylvania State University.

Prior to coming to Mount Aloysius College in 1992, he was on active duty with the United States Air Force for twenty-two years, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. In his last active duty assignment, he served as Professor of English at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado for more than a decade.

At Mount Aloysius, Tom chaired the Division of Arts, Sciences, and Professional Studies for eleven years and the Department of English and Fine Arts for twenty years, teaching almost two hundred courses during that time. He designed the College’s English major in 2001.

Over the years, Tom has published a broad variety of works, including books on literature, technology, and decision making. He has delivered presentations on writing, literature, and “command and control” throughout the United States, Central America, and Europe.
