This scholarship was established in 1990 in memory of Sr. Silverius Shields, born in Lewistown, PA, in 1932. She entered the convent of the Sisters of Mercy in Cresson on her 25th birthday. She taught Latin and business at Mount Aloysius Academy. She was instrumental in the development of Mount Aloysius Junior College and was a registrar at the college for many years while also continuing to teach. She earned a Masters degree in sociology and accounting, and a doctorate in economics. In 1970, she was elected Mother Provincial of the Sisters of Mercy and in 1973 accepted the National Directorship of the Federation of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas. In 1980, she returned to Mount Aloysius College to become the campus archivist. She died in 1989.
